How can the 7 2x6s be 12’ long when they are protruding 10-1/2 past the face of the joists, the posts are already 12’ apart outside to outside plus you have the two joists for another 3”?
My patio is about 30 ft long and about 16 ft wide. I also have a western setting sun that makes it hot in the afternoon. Could I put 2×8 rafters nailed together to get the sixteen feet lenth and place them at 45 degrees to block out the afternoon sun? I figured I use 6×6 posts and put them about 10 feet apart. Would that work?
I’ve ordered my materials in cedar and will be building this plan this weekend. My only concern is the corner braces. They can only brace one of the 2×6’s, and with the 11’ span I’m concerned about sagging/warping over time. What are your thoughts?
The likelihood of sagging is minimal at best. The two carriage bolts at each end are what is really holding the beam up. The corner brace is as much for form as function, it’s effect on everything will be important but not significant. If you are indeed concerned by all means double up on the braces, one for each perimeter 2×6. I honestly don’t think it’s necessary though.
Great plan for a pergola. I built this over three days and it turned out great! My only comment would be about the 2×2 boards. I struggled with the spacing at first. I gather they should be spaced 1ft on center, starting with the first board on the edge of the 2×6 tails?
11′ span with a two by six is not a problem. There should be no sagging. If you are still concerned, cut 8 of the braces instead of 4 and brace both 2×6’s
Did you use 2 carriage bolts through each end of the boards forming the perimeter structure? Once you tighten them up there should be zero movement. Also if the bottoms of the posts are bolted to secure post saddles everything should be unitized.
I need a pergola project for the purpose of City Approval. It has to be 25′ long, 5′ wide, it will be 6 ft high at the lowest point and will be covered with asfalt shingles (just like the house – HOA requirement). Can you guys provide those drawings and how much will it cost me
I am looking to build a 13 x 13 pergola, do you have plans available for this?
Or do you have any recommendations or suggestions on how to adjust the 12 x 12 plans to fit into a 13 x 13?
Just finished it yesterday on our deck. 23 hours of labor to put together. Didn’t need the angle braces as we bolted to the house and deck railing. Went with the full 16ft width of the 2×6 cross pieces instead of 14. Tried the 9″ bolts, no go. The 10″ worked better.
how about plans with one end attached to house with ledger board so it would only have 2 posts instead of 4 ? or is it better to build it free standing with 4 posts because its appearance will be better that way .
what dimension for 8 1/2″ cutout depth wise? for the 7 2×6’s 12′ long
They seem great would like more to try

Hi. I love the plans you have for 12 x 12 Pergola. Do you perhaps have plans for one that is round and a way to bend the wood to form a circle.
Thank you
Can you send me the pdf link please

I just built this pergola and it wobbles. I even added double corner bracing. Has anyone had this issue ? Or know a solution to it?

What a great help this is awesome
Please email me the pdf. I cannot find it.

Can a 10×12 pergola be anchored on dirt. If not how deep should the post be set?

Just a quick one how can you use 9inch carriage bolts to secure a 6inch post and 2 2inch joists = 10 inch are they to be recessed thanks
2x2s are actually 1.5″
6×6 is 5.5″
so it’s 3″+ 5.5″ = 8.5″ leaving .5″ thread reveal.
The photo shows 16 corner braces. On the plans only shows 8.
Any clarification? Thanks
